What is a Cork oak? 

The Cork oak is the only type of tree in the world that produces such a dense cork layer with uniform structure and which grows from itself when the cover layer disappears. The bark of this tree-usually called "Cork", is a dead cork tissue, which is constantly generated during the life cycle of these trees, since the size of the trunk and branches is constantly expanding.

Lightweight. The air entrapped in the micro-chambers constitutes 90% of their volume and about 50% of the bulk density, which makes the actual weight about 190 to 250 kg/m3. This is a material that is five times lighter than water and because it does not absorb water, practically it cannot sink.

Liquid- and gas-tightness. These characteristics are available due to the large amount of suberin. The suberin weight rate is between 39 and 45% of the cork mass. This substance has a moisture insulating properties typical for its structure and at the same time increases the thermal insulation.

Unsustainability and chemical resistance. Cork does not react to chemical substances. Its structure not only ensures that liquids and gases cannot penetrate, but also does not enter into any chemical contact with them, nor disintegrate. Cork also has neutral taste and smell and does not absorb extraneous odors.

Resistance to biological corrosion. This corrosion occurs under moisture and conditions that help the occurrence of decay. Increased resistance to biodegradation can, along with other things, be due to the presence of tannin and the lack of proteins that tend to degrade. It also keeps the fungi and mold resistance. Its surface and structure do not nourish fungi or mold and thus not providing them with conditions to survive.

Thermal insulation properties. The thermal conductivity coefficient for this material is 0,037-0,040 W/(mK). Along with the excellent thermal conductivity coefficient, it is worth mentioning the significant internal heat value contained in cork. This value comes as a result of the low thermal losses of cork. Unlike other materials, cork retains its insulating properties within a significant temperature range. It comes out of the burning charger, which begins to evaporate under the influence of high temperatures. Due to low thermal conductivity, the cork is always feels nice to touch; it neither absorbs, nor emits warmth to our body. The material also stabilizes air temperature and humidity.

Acoustic and anti-vibrating properties. Cork is capable of absorbing from 30 to 70% of the sounds with a frequency from 400 to 4000Hz. At the same time, the structure of the cork and its elasticity make it possible to suppress the sound from the air and the shock sounds, thus eliminating areas with sound bridges. Thanks to its specific structure,  cork absorbs sound waves and vibrations (does not transmit vibrations, but stops them).

Weak combustion. Cork is fire-resistant and can be classified as Euro Class E. This detail depends on many conditions. Because of its poor conductivity, cork sheets usually burn hard.

Elasticity and compressibility. The cell membranes of cork are extremely elastic, causing them to remain foldable and elastic even after removing the pressure they get back to their initial form. When cork is subjected to very strong forces, the gas in the chambers will be compressed and the size of the structure will be reduced. When the pressure is stopped, cork returns to its former state.

Antistatic. The cork surface does not hold electrical discharges, in other words,  cork does not become electric, therefore there is no phenomenon of attraction and absorption of dust observed. Therefore, cork surfaces are exceptionally clean. If cork is used in the rooms where asthmatics and allergy sufferers are staying, this will reduce the contact with allergy-causing substances.

Durability. Cork is considered to be in the group of most durable organic substances. They practically do not age, and even after many years they do not lose their properties, and some media make it even stronger   (for example, sea water). It is not necessary to impregnates cork.

Easy processing. Cork can be treated with simple cutting and scraping tools. It lies well on uneven surfaces, since mold adapts to the environment. It has good adhesive properties, which facilitates the gluing on different surfaces.

Health neutral. The material is harmless in terms of health. It is not toxic neither in contact with the skin, nor in case of accidental contact with the digestive system. It doesn't cause any kind of allergy. Does not irritate the conjunctiva of the eye or mucous membranes of the nose or respiratory organs.

Environment-friendly. Cork is a raw material obtained from trees which can be regenerated, so its use does not have adverse effect on the environment.

Mechanical endurance. Cork products have high mechanical endurance, as well as the ability to keep their mechanical properties at temperatures from -80C to 140C.
